In the first game of the Rocky Mountain Showdown series at the Pepsi Center, the Metro State Roadrunners hockey club fell 3-1 to the Colorado State University Rams in the first of their weekend series versus the Rams. The second game of the series with be played tomorrow night at the Ice Center at the Promenade with puckdrop at 6:15pm against the CSU Rams.
The Rams would find the back of the first, with Josh Malone picking up a pass from Dmitri Smith to take the 1-0 lead in favor for the CSU Rams just 2 minutes into the opening frame. About 2 minutes following the first goal, the Rams would extend their lead with a goal from Jacob Christofferson with assists from Jordan Kauffman and Colton Hellman.
End of the 1st period: Rams lead 2-0
The second period would be rather uneventful, as neither team would be able to find the back of the net and fairly few penalties for either team.
The Rams would remain in the lead with the 2-0 advantage.
Metro State would finally get on the board bringing the Roadrunners to a one goal deficit, with a goal coming from Robert Valdez with assists from Kevin Behrens and Anthony Newsome. With time winding down in the period, the Roadrunners would pull goalkeeper Austin Borchert for the man advantage. Unfortunately, the Roadrunners would be able to not convert on the tying goal, as the Rams found the empty net to put a dagger into the Roadrunners hopes.
