Roadrunners cross finish big in Mountaineer/ Cowboy Invitational

Three women and two men on Metro’s cross country team finished in the top 10 during the Mountaineer/Cowboy Invitational in Gunnison Sept. 13.

The strong performances led the women to a second place finish with 49 points falling just short of Western State who finished first with 48 points.

Leading the women’s team was freshman Karina Sanchez who finished fourth with a time of 24:09:45. Victoria Alcala, senior, finished the race fifth with a time of 24:23:27. Evonna Ramirez, senior, rounded out the top of the women’s performances for the Runners with a ninth place finish and a time of 24:41:00.

The women’s team did not place in the first race so finishing second was a great improvement despite holding out their two top runners for the second week in a row.

The men’s team finished the overall competition in third place with 82 points falling behind the Mountaineers, who scored a perfect 15 and Colorado Mesa who scored 69 points.

A pair of sophomores led the men’s team with Jason Carey finishing eighth with a time of 27:17:00 and teammate Brandon Krage following close behind finishing ninth just two minutes later with a time of 27:19:00.

The Roadrunners next race will be Saturday the 20th in Colorado Springs for the Colorado College Invitational.
